This is crucial. It is important not to rely on canned printed label samples or a video from the manufacturer. Seeing how the label is printed will help you uncover any technical flaws in the printer. Ultimately, you are the expert on your labels and how you want them to look. To ensure that you learn all the printer's capabilities, provide your printer salesperson with digital label templates before the demonstration. It is important to know that if your template is designed for a different output device, be it your office inkjet printer or a commercial flexo printer, your salesperson may need to adjust the colours to meet expectations.

 

3. compare the "print duration" and not just the "print speed".

When evaluating "print speed", one naturally assumes that one is evaluating "how fast it takes to produce a print job". However, there are many technical reasons why this is not the case. Factors such as breaks for maintenance, processing delays and the time it takes to load a printer with blank labels and ink all have a significant impact on throughput. These are all factors that your production department must take into account when evaluating.

 

4. compare "print quality", not just "print resolution".

All label printers give a specification for "resolution", but this is not necessarily the same as "print quality". The question "What resolution should I aim for?" is notoriously difficult to answer, as there is often some trade-off between print quality and print speed. In addition to the physical dot size produced by the label printer, the halftone printing algorithm, the substrate and the ink set have a huge impact on the appearance and colour gamut of the printed label. So when you compare 1200 dpi with 1600 dpi or 2400 dpi, your own perception of quality is much more accurate than the technical specification.

 

5. ask for the cost of printing your label roll

It is important that after printing your label designs, you ask your vendor to calculate the cost of the printed label roll, including the cost of the ink and label stock. This will give you a realistic estimate of the final cost per label so that you can ultimately extrapolate how much you would pay each time you print your own labels.

 

6. Determine where you will buy your labels.

If you have specific performance or print quality requirements, you will probably choose a particular label material that works well with your printer. So find out who offers labels made from that material and whether the delivery time and cost of the die-cut label will meet your expectations. If you want to set up a computer lab in your home, you need to start with a kick-ass PC. But with so many ways to get good PCs these days, you have to choose:

 

Do you buy pre-built PCs? Or do you buy your own parts and build the PC with your bare hands?

 

I've chosen both options for the past 10 years, so I'm in a prime position to guide you through the process. Let's talk about what you need to build your own PC, what it's like to order a custom pre-built PC online, and which one I recommend.

 

What do you need to build your own gaming PC?

Building a PC is hard work, but it can be very rewarding. It gives you complete control over the process and really makes your PC feel like your own creation. It also makes it easier to upgrade your PC because you know how each piece and part fits together.

 

Speaking of parts, let's start with everything you need to build a complete computer and test it yourself:

To get the parts, I recommend PCPartPicker. It's a great resource for beginners and allows you to compare different parts so you get exactly what you want (and it will also tell you if any of your parts are incompatible). You can also use our checklist above and buy the parts individually from an online retailer like Amazon or pick them up at a local shop like MicroCenter.

 

To start this process, you need to know that PCs are complex and fickle. One wrong move can cause you problems when you try to boot your PC for testing. And if you're not careful when building up static electricity, you could accidentally fry one of your more expensive components.

 

This process requires hours of concentration and precision. If this is your first time, I recommend bringing along a trusted friend - especially if they have built a PC before.

 

For the building process you will need a flat surface and either an iPad, laptop or phone so you can watch a tutorial. The Best Ways to Build a PC includes an accompanying video that shows you exactly what to do and how to proceed.

 

The above video from ECPU is a great tool for beginners. They start by detailing the parts and why they are important before proceeding with the actual build. The video also has timestamps to make skipping easier. I also like this tutorial from PC Centric.

 

It's worth noting that all PC builds vary slightly depending on the parts you choose. If you're having trouble with a part that's not in your video tutorial, try reading the instructions - or better yet - look for a build video with your specific case, motherboard or processor. Do it.

 

How do you get a custom pre-built PC?

In addition to building your own PC, you can either buy a pre-built PC that comes out of the box at a shop like Best Buy, or you can customize one at an online shop like iBuyPower. The first may be fine, but I recommend you buy a custom one.

 

All you have to do is go to iBuyPower's website (there are many such websites, such as CyberPowerPC) and open your PC adapter. You can choose your parts from a long list and also check how your fantasy creation will play popular modern games Eldenring,

 

As long as all your parts fit together - it will warn you, for example, that the graphics card you want is too big for your case - you can check. Then an expert will assemble your parts for you, put the PC together and ship it to your home. When it arrives, all you have to do is remove the odd giant packing peanut in the case and plug it in.

 

It's all very convenient, and it also put a huge financial strain on me to have a new PC that is very easy to swallow. I was able to buy my iBuyPower PC through the website's built-in Affirm partnership. Affirm ran my credit and gave me an affordable interest rate and a 12-month payment plan. In total, I paid an extra US$189 for my US$2,324 PC, but it was worth it because I was able to upgrade my old desktop from a whole year ago.

 

If you have cash - or a really good credit card - you can certainly buy the whole thing. But if the cost of the PC is the biggest hurdle for you, getting a custom PC can make things easier if you go the route I did with monthly payments.

 

Which do I recommend?

In 10 years of mechanical engineering, I've never encountered a major problem with any of my builds. I've never fried anything and my PC has always booted up on the first or second try. I know many other talented PC builders have not been so lucky, but I have had great experiences. I also really enjoyed the process and basically imagined myself doing this every few years for the rest of my life.

 

However, after several builds and upgrades - plus a mnemonic - I wanted to try something simple and easy. I wanted a perfect build for work and play, and that's exactly what I got with the custom PC I got in 2021. I still had all my parts picked out, but didn't have to do any work. Most importantly, I could pay for the computer over the course of a year instead of paying upfront, which helped my family a lot during the pandemic.

 

When I buy a new PC many years from now, I will buy a Custom again without question. It's easy in almost every way, and I had an excellent experience with iBuyPower. Niagara Falls/Niagara Falls

Yes, of course - Niagara Falls is a day trip from Toronto!

Did you know that one of the most famous natural attractions in the world is a day trip from Toronto? You probably already knew that, but it's still good to mention it again! Niagara Falls is a very popular Canadian attraction - and for good reason!

 

We want to clarify something very briefly to avoid confusion: Niagara Falls, Ontario, is a city in Canada, while Niagara Falls, New York, is a city in the US across the border. And "Niagara Falls" is also the name of the three waterfalls that people want to see during their visit. In German, the waterfalls are usually referred to as Niagara Falls. They include:

 

Horseshoe Falls, also known as "Canadian Falls", is the largest waterfall that people think of first.

American Falls is the name of a smaller waterfall on the American side (also beautiful)

Bridal Veil Falls is the smallest waterfall right next to American Falls!

Visiting Niagara Falls is definitely a good idea. You don't have to pay an entrance fee to see the falls either - you can just admire them from the pavement.

 

Besides the actual falls, there are many attractions related to the falls, such as the famous Hornblower boat tour, the Journey Behind the Falls, the Skylon Observation Tower and much more. There are even fireworks every night in the summer, and the falls are lit up in the evening all year round so you can enjoy them after dark.

 

The downtown area of Niagara Falls - around Clifton Hill - offers numerous restaurants, casinos, museums, games and attractions for the whole family, including the Niagara Skywheel, Dinosaur Adventure Golf and much more.

 

North of the falls along the Niagara River, other activities include the Niagara Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours, the White Water Walk, the Whirlpool Aero Car, the Botanical Gardens and Butterfly Conservatory and more.

 

In short, there is more than enough to have an adventurous day in Niagara Falls. Because Niagara Falls is so popular (especially in summer), it's a good idea to book tickets for top activities (like the Hornblower boat tour) in advance to make it easier for you.

From Toronto to Niagara Falls by car

Niagara Falls is not too far from Toronto. The driving distance is approximately 130 kilometres and can take up to 1 hour and 30 minutes.

 

The most direct/popular route is the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) / 403 towards Hamilton. However, you can also take a more scenic route along Highway 81 through areas like Beamsville.

 

As you approach the falls on the QEW, simply follow the signs and exit onto ON-420 / Niagara Veterans Memorial Highway East. You can then find parking close to the falls at a high price (but short walk) or a little further away at a cheaper price (but a little further walk).

 

If you are driving, however, be sure to plan for traffic in and out of Toronto and through Hamilton. During morning and afternoon commute times, your travel time may well increase between 30 minutes and 2 hours.

From Toronto to Niagara Falls by train

If you want to travel by train, you have two options (which are not available at all times of the year): the GO train and the ViaRail train. Both trains depart from Toronto Union Station in downtown Toronto.

The GO train from Toronto to Niagara Falls Station only operates in the summer and on select major weekends in the fall. Alternatively, you can take the GO train from Toronto to Burlington and then hop on a GO bus to Niagara Falls (Route #12). This combined route is available all year round. The ViaRail train also departs from Toronto Union Station, but only runs once a day in the morning. The trip to Niagara Falls takes about 2 hours. There is also one ViaRail train per day going in the other direction. You can check the ViaRail website for timetables and details.

 

Both trains arrive at the same station in Niagara Falls, north of downtown. From there you can hop on the WEGO bus (also seasonal), call a taxi or just walk - it's a nice walk along the river (about 25 minutes) to the falls!

From Toronto to Niagara Falls by bus

As for buses that go directly from Toronto to Niagara Falls, there are two options: the Greyhound bus or the Megabus. Both buses depart from the same Toronto bus terminal.

Megabus offers many daily departures for trips that take about 2 hours. And at relatively good prices (about 20 CAD each way). Check the Megabus website for more information.

 

Greyhound has four direct buses per day with about the same travel time and similar prices. Check the Greyhound website for timetables and tickets. Both buses take you to the same bus terminal in Niagara Falls, which is located directly across from the train station.

A tour from Toronto to Niagara Falls

Another stress-free way to get to Niagara Falls is to take a shuttle or tour. Tours can be a great way to see the falls without incurring additional costs such as parking fees. Luckily, Niagara Falls is very popular and there are many tours to choose from!

 

Before booking a tour, be sure to check the exact itinerary - some tours include only for Niagara Falls, for example, while others also include wine tasting in Niagara on the Lake (see below) or other attractions.

 

Tours are definitely a great way to sit back and relax while a guide takes you to the best sights!

Printing photos at home is becoming more and more common. Indeed, the price of equipment has dropped a lot lately and there are more and more new passionate photographers. People take pleasure in making their photos, retouch them carefully and of course the next step is printing.

Often we entrust our images to a photo lab or we order our prints on the Internet. But sometimes we would like to do it at home because it is faster or simply for the pleasure of doing it ourselves.

 

It's true what a pleasure to control all the steps from the birth of the photo to its printing.

 

I am often asked for advice on how to print photos, hence the idea for this article.

 

Important clarification: there are already very complete articles on the Internet or in specialized magazines that deal with printing. My aim here is not to do the same thing, but to give people who are new to photo printing and who don't own a high-end printer some information. I will therefore concentrate on the essentials.

 

In the course of this article we will discuss: The necessary steps before printing your photos, useful concepts for printing, which print settings, choosing options in print drivers, which photo paper to choose, which photo printer to buy.

 

 Before printing :

You should start by retouching your photos correctly and work on a calibrated screen (see my last article) and a calibrated printer in relation to your inks and paper.

 

ICC profile and calibration: An ICC profile is a digital file (.icc or .icm) that specifies how a camera, scanner, monitor or printer should render colours. The profile is developed by a sensor for monitors and by a spectrophotometer for printers.

 

The ICC profile allows the colours displayed or printed to be adjusted so that they are identical to the reference colours.

 

Inkjet printer manufacturers and paper manufacturers provide ICC profiles free of charge and these are usually satisfactory.

 

If the ICC profile for your printer/paper combination is not available, you can try an ICC profile for a paper of the same type

 

If you are not satisfied with the result, I advise you to create an individual ICC profile, with a spectrophotometer if you have one, but I doubt it, or by calling on a specialist service provider. This is what I did (couleur-icc.com). In this case, you download and print a colour patch (A4 format on your photo paper), you send it by mail to the service provider who analyses it and establishes your ICC profile for your printer/ink/paper trio. It's worth paying a little (from 25 euros per profile on some sites) and starting from a good base, otherwise hello failed tests... which will end up costing you more than the profile, will make you waste your time and will also spoil the pleasure of printing...

 

Before printing, it is essential to retouch your photos and prepare them for printing.

 

There is only one rule, especially for beginners in photo retouching: retouching is used to improve the photo and is done with a calibrated screen. If you have experience in retouching, no problem, but for beginners, be careful! We often see many people who retouch their photos too much and badly, and on top of that on uncalibrated screens. Remember: calibrated screen, "light" retouching (not the contrast, saturation and sharpness sliders at full speed!). I will soon make a video on how to learn how to retouch photos (don't forget to subscribe to my newsletter to avoid missing it!)
